To celebrate the Hall’s 150th anniversary, Matthew Bourne and his acclaimed dance company New Adventures bring their multi-award-winning production of The Car Man to the Royal Albert Hall for the very first time.

A dance-thriller based on Bizet’s beloved Carmen, The Car Man will be completely reimagined for the gladiatorial arena of the Royal Albert Hall, adding a frisson of danger as the dancers perform throughout the auditorium amid stage designs by Olivier and Tony award-winner Lez Brotherston.

Featuring an expanded company of 65 dancers and musicians, a live orchestra and epic new designs, these 14 performances of The Car Man are a unique opportunity to see this extraordinary production as you’ve never seen it before. The 19th Century Spanish cigarette factory becomes a greasy garage-diner in 1960s America where a small-town’s dreams are shattered by the arrival of a handsome stranger. Fuelled by heat and desire, the inhabitants are driven into an unstoppable spiral of greed, lust, betrayal and revenge.

Matthew Bourne’s vivid storytelling combines with one of the most passionately dramatic scores ever written, with musical arrangements by Terry Davies featuring Rodion Shchedrin’s Carmen Suite (after Bizet’s Carmen), to create a dance event like no other.

What a troupe of dancers - cant help but be impressed by their athleticism and skill Not sure the staging quite worked in the royal albert hall though... the large catwalk felt surplus to requirements and only served to block the view of the action on the main stage from my seat.

Absolutely brilliant show full of talented beautiful people. It really is amazing how the actors / dancers portray the story without dialogue. I've seen dozens of shows in the West End and this is one of the best. Amazing.

Julia Wall

I thought that the show was BRILLIANT!!!!!

An excellent production, especially staged to support 150 years of the Royal Albert Hall. An expanded cast to fill the space. You get very close to the performers if seated in 'the arena' but occasionally the view is slightly restricted by persons in front of you (you're all on the same level). Excellent value seats, however!

Another amazing show by Matthew Bourne with the icing on the cake being in the Royal Albert Hall ??

JB

Fantastic production with superb dancers. Seats in the arena, whilst very close the stage, where not staggered, so views to the main stage where quite restricted by the people in the rows in front. Any scenes performed on the floor of the stage could not be seen. That said, tickets were extremely good value so I shouldn’t complain!

Thoroughly enjoyed The Car Man. It was so entertaining and the energy and professionalism of the dancers was evident from start to finish. Would definitely recommend.

The star ratings are based on the seats we were moved to. Seats in the arena were not described as limited view but it was very difficult to see the stage set or below the dancers' waists because of the closeness of the rows, lack of theatre style seating arrangements and height of the stage. We asked to be moved after about 15 minutes; if we hadn't been given different seats, we would have left, it was that bad.
