See the story of Henry VIII from a female perspective as Shakespeare’s exploration of love, lineage and power, co-written with John Fletcher, unfolds in the Globe Theatre this Summer.
You know the story: a King who turns his country upside down to try and secure a male heir. But it’s never been told this way before.
A Queen fights for justice. A Lady provokes reformation. But in the absence of a son, can a Princess change the future?
Amy Hodge (Women Beware Women, Globe) directs this production which sees the Globe’s 2022 Resident Writer Hannah Khalil (A Museum in Baghdad) become Shakespeare and Fletcher’s third collaborator.
Content
This production contains overt sexual content, an on-stage depiction of an execution, and an on-stage depiction of childbirth. There are also latex balloons, sudden loud noises, and the use of stage blood and a gunAccess
There will be an Audio Described Performance on Thursday 23rd June at 7:30pm, a Captioned Performance on Thursday 7th July at 7:30pm, a Relaxed Performance on Saturday 30th July at 2pm and a Signed Performance on Saturday 6th August at 2pm.Recent Reviews
GREAT SHOW
Just loved it . Great singing and acting and the golden balls etc... I am sure Henry VIII would have approved
The story is very familiar - the treatment not so. Juxtaposing the self-obsessed, bawdy King with the damage he inflicts. Not for Shakespeare purists but Jamie Ballard's performance as Cardinal Wolsey is superb. Despite him not being the nicest of characters Ballard's portrayal of his downfall is seriously moving and all to a soulful singing of "I've wasted time, time wastes me" (Richard II).
Shockingly bad , overtly sensational , offensive ( you should have seen peoples faces when the huge gold penis was brought on stage ) . The Globe have ridiculed Shakespeare , it felt like an amateurish pantomime and we left ( like many previous reviewers ) at the interval . Do not waste your money .
It's amazing. Taking the audience with them the actors live there roles. I loved the message about women who don't matter. Only I can't understand the continuing feelings of Catherine after the betraying. But that's part of the play. All in all it's a awesome experience for incredible less money. My advice: Choose a standing ticket. You will be in the middle of the actors.
Great!!!!!
Nice adaptation of a classic play. Good acting.
The production had a fresh and fun adaptation of Henry VIII. The cast was superb and it was a most enjoyable theater production.
An amazing experience at a ridiculously cheap price. We loved the play and the whole experience of being at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre.
Henry VII cross with Legally Blonde/Six. Great fun but not for the purists.
It was hilarious and tragic at the same time, I loved it! Brilliant!
Stunning!! It was so so great! I loved all the values that have been added fo the Shakespeare's original story. Inclusive, feminist, everything was so great!!
