In 2011, Lynn Nottage began spending time with the people of Reading, Pennsylvania: officially one of the poorest cities in the USA.

During the following two years, she dug deep into the forgotten heart of middle America, finding a city divided by racial tension and the collapse of industry.

Sweat is the Pulitzer Prize-winning play that Lynn Nottage wrote following her experience.

Her tale of friends pitted against each other by big business, and the decline of the American Dream received its UK premiere at the Donmar, directed by former Donmar Resident Assistant Director and Artistic Director of the Bush Theatre Lynette Linton and is now set to transfer to the Gielgud Theatre.

Disappointed after all the hype. A number of the cast spoke really badly, even after we managed to tune in to their accents. The plot was pretty boring too and mono thematic. The changes in date were confusing and not well delineated. [I don't suppose anyone is taking any notice of this feedback.]

The show was surprising, impactful, thought-provoking. More people should go see it.

It was wonderful and so strong, for my first play in English I couldn't see a better play !

Sweat is a wonderful play. Well-written. Actors and actresses are good. However, I don't think the direction was good enough. I saw actors and actresses moving chairs and tables to change the decor of the next scenes which is useful and practicle for the direction but not for our imagination. This made me feel uncomfortable and I struggled to free my imagination through this great story.

All the performances were absolutely consummate. The overall show was extremely poweeful, relevant and very moving. If it wasn't finishing, I'd see it again. Highly recommended.

5* Show! An absolutely hard-hitting play full of grit and true realism. Would definitely recommend others to see this before it closes on 20/07/19
