First impressions are important, so a show’s first song is key! But not all opening numbers are created equal. Some throw everything they have into those first three minutes. Some give you an intriguing snippet of upcoming themes. Some use wit and charm to set the scene. But what makes a good opening number? For us, an opening number should be memorable, introduce us to important elements like setting and characters, and leave us wanting more. So which musical has the best opening number? Well, it’s all down to taste but here are what’s widely considered to be the 20 best opening numbers in musical theatre history. 1. Hello - The Book of Mormon You can’t beat simplicity, and what’s a better way to introduce a show than saying “hello”? The Book of Mormon’s opening number is not only hilarious and cheeky, it’s also incredibly clever. Giving us a taste of life as a Mormon Missionary while offering some crucial information about the Mormon religion, it perfectly sets the scene in both tone and story. 2. Willkommen - Cabaret And what’s a hello without a welcome? Cabaret’s opener is delivered by the Emcee - the evening’s host. It invites the audience to enter the world of the Kit Kat Club and leave the outside world outside where it belongs. It’s equal parts thrilling and unsettling. The legendary musical duo were masters of political storytelling, and Cabaret is a prime example. The celebration of individuality and love is laced with threat as the rise of Nazi Germany is waiting beyond the doors of the club, so the faux joviality of Willkommen is pure perfection. 3. All That Jazz - Chicago What we’re learning from this list is that Kander and Ebb knew how to start a show! All That Jazz is a seductive, troubling number that gives us an insight into the inner workings of our characters and the upcoming events in the musical. Once again, it’s features political commentary. This time, it’s about the corruption of the justice system. 4. No One Mourns the Wicked - Wicked If an unreliable narrative is your jam, then look no further than the opener of Wicked. No One Mourns The Wicked is a literal witch hunt for our show’s main protagonist, Elphaba. The citizens of Oz are trying to find the “Wicked Witch” to punish her for her misdeeds. It’s a powerful number that leans into our bias of the green witch we all love to hate from The Wizard of Oz. 5. Omigod You Guys - Legally Blonde Possibly the catchiest song in musical theatre history, Omigod You Guys is the surprise entry on the best opening numbers in musical theatre history list. Don’t let all the pink deceive you. Legally Blonde is an important exploration into prejudice and sexism in a male-dominated world. But the opening song presents the social expectations of women. Plus it’s just really fun. 6. In The Heights - In The Heights If you don’t get tingles when you hear those claves, you need to try again. The scene-setting opener from Lin-Manuel Miranda’s debut musical is exposition at its finest. It introduces the main players within the show and gives us an insight into life in The Heights. 7. I Hope I Get It - A Chorus Line Big brass. Rousing percussion. A whole cast number. How could you not love the opener from A Chorus Line? Originally staged in 1975, it proves the undying desire starlets have to strike it big, and their universal experience. 8. What Do You Do With A BA In English? - Avenue Q Do you know what’s refreshing? A healthy dose of realism. And that’s exactly what we get in Avenue Q. The show opens with Preston lamenting over the fact he has a useless degree, only for us to meet all his neighbours who have equally sucky lives. You’d think that would be depressing, right? Luckily it’s accompanied by a cheery melody, so it’s all fine. Everything is fine. 9. The Ballad of Sweeney Todd - Sweeney Todd A musical about a murderous barber who bakes his victims into pies? Who thought that would sell tickets in the 1970s? Well, Stephen Sondheim did, and he’s a musical genius, so of course, he was correct. This retelling of the fictitious Sweeney Todd wowed audiences and critics. Its first Broadway run earned 17 Tony and Drama Desk Awards, and the West End production took home two Olivier Awards. The eerie yet alarming opener prepares you for all that is to come during the show. And we absolutely love it for that. 10. Good Morning Baltimore - Hairspray We’ve had dark. We’ve had realism. Now it’s time for sunshine and optimism. And no one can compete with Tracy Turnblad when it comes to optimism. During Good Morning Baltimore, we accompany our leading lady as she welcomes the day and sees the bright side of everything… including street rats. It just makes you feel like we should all be a bit more Tracy.

We love going to the theatre, obviously, but sometimes leaving the house can be hard! Not to mention the commute to the West End. Wouldn’t it be lovely if all our favourite musicals had a movie adaptation? Don’t get us wrong, there are some great movie musicals. Little Shop of Horrors, Hairspray, Mamma Mia, Wicked, Les Mis, there are too many great movie musicals to name them all. But we’re greedy, and we want more. There are so many musicals that deserve a movie adaptation! From epic battle scenes to animated numbers, special effects to sprawling landscapes. They could do it all with the magic of the silver screen. And though there’s an infinite number of shows we’d love to see on screen, here are the top 10 musicals that deserve a movie adaptation. Hamilton So there’s a live stage recording of Hamilton available to watch. But how good would it be to see Marquis de Lafayette storm the battlefield while spitting out lyrics faster than bullets in 4K? Hamilton has the perfect potential balance of epic visuals and political tension, with a sprinkling of romantic entanglement that would make it a dynamic film that could win all the awards. But would we want to see the original cast reprise their roles? Or find some brand new, diverse talent that can breathe new life into these historic characters? Hadestown Could you imagine the special effects? Hadestown is a Greek myth retelling that takes you from a barren land on earth to the gritty depths of the underworld. Featuring a ghostly train ride, a grimy factory town, and an opulent office fit for a god, the sets and props alone would be incredible. Throw in the fact Eurydice takes us on a journey not once but twice… it would be a visual spectacle, that’s all we’re saying. We would love to see how The Fates would translate to screen, and hear Wait For Me through surround sound speakers. We can feel the tingles forming already. The Book of Mormon This one could be tricky, but a film of The Book of Mormon would bring so much imagery to life! Picture this: an animated sequence for Spooky Mormon Hell Dream. A number with HUNDREDS of dancers for Turn It Off. The ability to rewind so you can check that they really did just say what they said. The Book of Mormon is primed and ready for a cinematic revamp. And given its creators are Trey Parker and Matt Stone, we’re surprised it hasn’t happened yet. Fun Home Now this one has been in production for years, and we can’t wait for the day it’s released. Based on the graphic novel with the same name, Fun Home follows Alison through her childhood as she comes to grips with her identity. Living with her demanding and obsessive father who runs a funeral home, Alison hides her sexuality until she goes to college. But through her own exploration of self, she discovers her father’s secrets, which change the family forever. It’s a deeply moving and emotional musical that deserves a movie adaptation. So it’s lucky it’s getting one, with Jake Gyllenhaal set to play Alison’s dad, Bruce. Company Can you believe that Stephen Sondheim’s Company hasn’t had a movie adaptation yet? The show follows Bobby as they celebrate their 35th birthday. As the token single friend, Bobby’s friends start questioning how they’re going to remedy that situation, despite each of them having their own relationship problems. Throughout Company we see snippets of Bobby’s past relationships and the meetings they have with their pals, which makes us really question if being in a relationship is better than being single. Though the original show sees Bobby as a single man with heterosexual friends, the 2018 West End production changed a few things. First, Bobby became Bobbie - a woman turning 35. This added a new dynamic to the character as stereotypical social expectations of women and men in their 30s are so different. It also featured a gay couple as Amy became Jamie, making the show more contemporary. We don’t know about you, but we’d love to see a movie adaptation of the gender-switched version.

20 Musicals Based on True Stories Ranked Did you know musicals aren’t just entertaining, they’re educational, too? That might be a fib. But some musicals do make us aware and a little bit more informed about real-life events and true stories. A classic example of musicals based on true stories is biographical jukebox musicals. Some of the biggest artists of all time have had their rise to fame and personal challenges documented in a stage show.  Other musicals based on true stories focus on historic events. Some are big, like the American Revolution. Some are small, focusing on personal stories about forbidden love. Here are 20 musicals based on true stories.

So you’ve seen Hamilton, and you’re looking for something to fill that hip-hop musicals hole in your life. We don’t blame you. Lin-Manuel Miranda’s groundbreaking musical changed theatre forever. Not only did it make history cool, it also popularised using rap as its primary storytelling device and brought diversity to the Victoria Palace Theatre in ways a theatre show hadn’t before. Since opening in London in 2017, Hamilton isn’t just one of the top West End musicals; it’s also one of the top tourist attractions. And there are no shows like Hamilton… right? Well, we have news for you. There are quite a few musicals similar to Hamilton, and some of them are on in the West End right now. So buckle up, because we’re going to dish out some facts and let you know what to watch after Hamilton. What musical is most like Hamilton? Realistically, the show most similar to Hamilton is In The Heights. Lin-Manuel Miranda earned his first Tony Award for this rapped-through hip-hop musical about life as a Latino in a poor neighbourhood in New York. Though In The Heights isn’t currently playing in London, it does come back to the West End, so keep your eyes peeled. For shows currently playing in the West End, musicals similar to Hamilton include Hadestown, Jesus Christ Superstar, SIX, and even Les Mis. What should I watch if I loved Hamilton? So, if you were going to ask us what is the best musical to see after Hamilton right now in the West End, it really depends on which elements of the show you enjoyed most. Here are a few musicals similar to Hamilton and how they compare. If you liked Hamilton for its music, Hadestown is absolutely for you. The sung-through show is full of soul and catchy numbers, and there are definitely trills and rhythms that’ll give you the same goosebumps Hamilton did. Featuring a diverse cast, a moody atmosphere, and having won eight Tony Awards, it’s definitely not a show to be missed. Now, you may be wondering how on earth Jesus Christ Superstar has anything to do with Hamilton, but hear us out. When Jesus Christ Superstar was first staged in 1971, it broke all the rules. Not only did it take a well-documented story and couple it with a non-traditional musical genre for the time, but it also used the show’s antagonist as its narrator. Using a sung-through rock score, Jesus Christ Superstar walked on water so Hamilton could charge the battleground. Hamilton tells the untold story of Alexander Hamilton. SIX tells the untold story of Henry VIII’s wives. Giving these historical women the voices male-dominated storytelling hadn’t afforded them before, SIX empowers the victims of the lecherous king to step out and be heard. With a mix of musical genres, it’s definitely one to watch if you liked Hamilton. From one revolution to another, Les Misérables tells the story of one man’s road to redemption during a revolution… which sounds a bit like Hamilton, where one man is trying to prove himself during a revolution. Featuring battles, camaraderie, and a healthy dose of the “doing what’s rights,” Les Mis is definitely a show to watch after Hamilton.

Tony Award winner Leslie Odom Jr will make his West End debut this summer when he returns to the role of Aaron Burr, after originating the role on Broadway. Odom will join Hamilton's London company for a strictly limited nine-week run at the Victoria Palace Theatre from 3 July to 5 September 2026. Odom said: “Returning to Hamilton and revisiting the role of Aaron Burr with the growth and perspective of time has been a profoundly healing artistic experience. I am having so much fun! I am thankful to Cameron Mackintosh and Jeffrey Seller for the invitation to make my West End debut with this fabulous company. “The London production will grant me a few more glorious weeks to share Lin-Manuel’s music with an international audience who, I have learned, love this show as much, if not more, than I. I’m crossing the ocean and I just can’t wait."

Hamilton is a recordbreaker. From its chart-topping cast album to its Pulitzer Prize for Drama, the Lin-Manuel Miranda juggernaut has become a cultural phenomenon. It’s even in the Guinness Book of Records for the fastest-ever rap on a Broadway stage, and most Tony Award nominations for a musical. And now it’s added another, slightly less enviable accolade: it has the most expensive tickets in Broadway history. That’s all thanks to Leslie Odom Jr., who is reprising his Tony Award-winning performance as Aaron Burr until 26 November. If you want to be in the room where it happens, it’ll set you back $1,525.50 (£1,116.78). That’s for a single seat in Row K, not a private performance. It’s enough to make King George blush.   So it got us wondering: how many West End shows could we see for the same price? If you can’t be bothered to read the rest of the article, the answer is: a lot.  To keep things fair, we’ve compared like-for-like. In London, the very best Hamilton ticket will set you back £212 for Row E. If you were happy to sit in Row K, the very same row as the Broadway seat listed above, you’d pay £164, £952.78 less than across the pond. From there, the bargains just keep rolling in: want to see how the witches’ story ends before the film hits cinemas? Wicked is £160 in Row F. If you prefer something a little less family-friendly but packed with wicked humour of its own, The Book of Mormon tickets go for £152 in Row E. Prefer hell to heaven? Hadestown offers seats in the middle of Row G, and right in the centre of the Dress Circle’s front row, for £152. The most recent revival of The Producers has earned five-star reviews across the board, and you can watch it unfold from Row D or the Dress Circle front row for £128. For sheer spectacle, Starlight Express delivers: £182 gets you into Row CC of Carriage 2, close enough to the racetrack to high-five the cast as they skate by in the finale megamix. And finally, you can see Disney’s latest herculean hit, Hercules, from Row D for £121.  Add them all up and you’ve got seven West End shows in the best seats in the house for £1,107. You’ll even have £9.78 left over for a couple of interval ice creams.

As the U.S sets off fireworks, grills an obscene amount of meat, and watches bizarre sports with insane rules (why does American Football stop every 23.6 seconds?) we’re eyeing something else: a stellar lineup of Broadway productions. Yes, the breakup anniversary has reminded us of all the good things we miss about our ex, and 249 years feels long enough to try and have a civil relationship (that doesn’t end in a civil war). We’ve already managed to stake a claim on the best of Broadway, including; Wicked, The Lion King, and (perhaps most ironically of all) Hamilton, but there are plenty more we would like to liberate for the West End.  Afterall, it isn’t like we only take. The West End has given Broadway Phantom of the Opera and Six. In return, Broadway has sent us Hadestown and Stereophonic.  We’ve shared stars, and stories for decades. So let’s keep the cultural exchange going. Because if Boop! the Musical can’t live forever on Broadway, it can have a new lease of life in London. Maybe Happy Ending The surprise of the Tony Awards this year, Maybe Happy Ending is a quietly beautiful story about two outdated helper robots, Oliver and Claire, who meet in a future Seoul where humans no longer need them. As they share music, memories, and the flicker of something like love, the musical becomes a moving reflection on connection and obsolescence. It picked up six Tony Awards at this year's ceremony, including Best Musical, and made Darren Criss the first Asian-American actor to win Best Leading Actor in a Musical. With its soulful score and delicate design, this is a gentle standout with plenty of emotional weight. Death Becomes Her Based on the 1992 cult film, this musical adaptation follows Madeline and Helen, two women who drink a mysterious potion that grants eternal youth. However, it’s only after drinking the luminous green liquid that they discover it has some seriously nasty side effect. Who would have thought, eh?  With sharp humour, high stakes, and more animal print than London Zoo, Death Becomes Her leans into the absurdity of immortality. It was nominated for ten Tony Awards at this year's ceremony, taking home the prize for Best Costume Design - and if you’ve Lisle Von Rhuman’s outfit reveal on the show's Instagram page, you’ll understand why.  Boop! The Musical The 1930s cartoon got a new, if brief, lease of life in Boop!. The new musical tells the story of Betty Boop as she tries to break free from the cartoon world to experience real life for the first time. As she navigates New York City with a wide-eyed sense of wonder, Boop discovers  independence, identity, and the power of optimism. Its run has been short and sweet, just like the main girl herself, but during their brief time on Broadway they managed to pick up three Tony Award nominations. The musical was praised for its blend of nostalgic charm and  inventive stagecraft, including one of the most inventive visual transitions of the season. Check out their instagram for some insane technicolour quick-changes.  Oh, Mary! Cole Escola’s solo play follows Mary Todd Lincoln in the final weeks before her husband’s assassination. In this camp and comical production, the First Lady is portrayed as a chaotic and frustrated cabaret performer, desperately trying to hold things together. It sounds odd (because, well, it is), but it just works. What begins as a series of misbehaving monologues becomes a sharp, strange, and emotionally rich meditation on failure, legacy, and performance itself. The play earned two Tony Awards at this year’s ceremony, including Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role and Best Direction, and due to phenomenal demand has had its limited run extended to January 2026. We may have to wait a little to see it this side of the pond, but we know it’ll be worth the wait.

Lin-Manuel Miranda's award-winning musical Hamilton has made a significant impact since its debut, transitioning from Broadway to the West End in 2017. The show has garnered numerous accolades, redefining the musical landscape with its innovative blend of hip-hop, rap, and R&B, differentiating from the traditional musical style.  The compelling narrative and incredible score bring to life the lesser-known story of Alexander Hamilton, one of America's founding fathers. The show explores Hamilton's pivotal role in the American Revolution, his role as the first Secretary of the Treasury under George Washington, and his complex personal life, including his relationship with his wife, Eliza Hamilton. The production, staged at the Victoria Palace Theatre, captivates audiences with its characters. Take a look at the Hamilton characters below.   Who are the main Hamilton characters?  The characters in the show are based on the real men and women involved in the American Revolution and the American democracy. The show offers a fresh, modern take on the American Revolution by reimagining its historic figures as diverse characters reflecting today's multicultural America.  Alexander Hamilton  Alexander Hamilton, his name is Alexander Hamilton and he is the star of the show! The character of Alexander Hamilton is portrayed as a tenacious and ambitious founding father whose life is marked by both triumph and tragedy. Hamilton's dedication to his ideals and career is both celebrated and criticised by those around him, reflecting the complex nature of his personality and relationships. His ambition often comes at a personal cost, as he prioritises his career over his marriage, leading to tension and envy among his peers.  Aaron Burr  Aaron Burr serves as both narrator and rival to Alexander Hamilton. Unlike Hamilton, who is outspoken and eager to share his political beliefs, Burr is more cautious and reserved, often holding his cards close to his chest. His reluctance to openly declare his stance can make him appear untrustworthy to others. This contrast in values and methods highlights the tension between the two men, ultimately leading to their infamous duel.  Eliza Hamilton  As the wife of Alexander Hamilton, Eliza's journey throughout the show is one of resilience, loyalty, and profound emotional depth. From her first meeting with Alexander Hamilton, her character is portrayed as loving and devoted, yet she faces numerous personal challenges and heartbreaks. Her unwavering loyalty is tested by her husband's infidelities and political ambitions.   King George III  King George III is portrayed as immature and spoiled, which underscores his role as the main antagonist. This is particularly true when he performs the song “You’ll Be Back,” which defines his entitlement and over-the-top behaviour. His character juxtaposes the other characters, using humour and immaturity to contrast with more serious or noble figures.   George Washington   The first president of the US, George Washington’s portrayal highlights his strong-willed nature and confidence, which contrast with Alexander Hamilton's impulsive and ambitious demeanour. Despite their differences, Washington recognizes Hamilton's brilliance and potential, often acting as a mentor, guiding him through the complexities of governance.  Thomas Jefferson   Thomas Jefferson emerges as one of Alexander Hamilton's most formidable political rivals, embodying a stark contrast to Hamilton's ideals. Jefferson's character is portrayed with a flamboyant flair and charismatic presence, which brings both humour and tension into the narrative.  Angelica Schuyler   Angelica Schuyler, is portrayed as an intelligent and articulate woman deeply devoted to her family, particularly her sisters. Despite her instant connection with Alexander Hamilton, Angelica prioritises her sister Eliza's happiness and future, choosing to step aside and encourage the relationship between Hamilton and Eliza.
